Youth First Monthly Report

Educational Awareness

 Advocate Article: Asked Advocate to write story about AMS Visit to the Care Center to visit and decorate doors.  Advocate article included large photo and an explanation of Youth As Resources;

Youth As Resources: Explained Youth as Resources to all parents attending AMS On A Roll.  Also explained upcoming Care Center Visit and Door Decorating;

Morgan Family Foundation:  Visited Annandale on Wed., Jan. 9.  Founder Lee Morgan, Executive Director Lori Kuhn and Minnesota Director Kathy Grochow were their representatives.   Mark Casey, Nicole Wilke, Tracy, Steve Niklaus, Pam and Mary explained our programs and answered questions.  Then the Morgan reps observed Cardinal Buddies.  Thank you notes were sent to each representative;

Youth First Room: is open daily from 8:15 to 3:00 p.m.;

AMS Web Site:  Mary is working with Katy Manley to give our site a new look;

Asset Building

AMS Exploratory Day: Students will have the opportunity to explore interests with many course offerings and field trips. Sent letters to several businesses in hopes of them partnering to host a class  (asset: caring school climate);

 On A Roll: Helped with set up and serving on mornings of Nov. 21 and 22;

Community Youth Night: Super Game Night will be put on by Annandale Evangelical Free Church. Students will play human foos ball, dodgeball, use Free Church Rec. Center , movie available, have beverages, treats and prizes (asset: constructive use of time);

Youth As Resources:  Nicole Wilke, Jeff Lundquist and Mary B.B. serve on this youth-led board as adult board members. Youth are in grades 8 12. Youth First has co-sponsored several grant applications, along with youth organizations.  Mary has helped write proposals with students, helped supervise events and sent in follow up paperwork.  These projects include: Trip to the Haunted Hollow with AMS Student Council, Nursing Home Visit and Door Decorating with AMS Student Council and Key Club (two proposals), After the Game with AHS Key Club, and Bendix Kids Night Out with National Honor Society;

Centennial Villa Bingo: AMS EBD students join Mary or Pam at bingo with senior citizens on Wednesdays (assets: youth given useful roles in the community, other adult relationships);

 

   After the Bell and AMS Teen Club: Pam Wurm is supervising these after-school programs at AMS for identified students in grades 5-8.  Clubs started on Nov. 14.  There are approximately 31 students participating.  Funding comes from a Targeted Services Grant through the school district. (Assets: caring school climate, other adult role models, constructive use of time, creative activities, reading for pleasure, bonding to school, community service, youth given useful role in community, youth programs, positive identity);

 Student of the Month: Celebrates students with exemplary efforts and behavior (asset: caring school climate);

A.M.S. display case: Updated with student achievements and current events at AMS (asset: support, caring school climate);

Community Connections

 Kiwanis Bowling Tournament:  Mary working with Mike Zieska and Jeff Lundquist on promoting, teams and silent auction;

Bendix Rockin Readers: AHS student volunteers will join Bendix students for an after-school reading program to be held Mondays and Wednesdays, from January 23 March 12.  One teacher and the high school volunteers will enjoy a snack, story and reading each afternoon with identified students;

Business Expo: Sent in registration and fee for April 12 Expo;

A.M.S. Parent Advisory: Mary Attended meeting Jan.14;

Quarterly Report: Completed;

Sales and Use Tax: Filed Jan. 25;

Secretary of State: Filed annual renewal for YF and FY Trust;

Directors and Officers Liablity Insurance: Purchased through Annandale State Agency again this year;

Support Staff Appreciation: January 16.  Set up luncheon and coordinated massages for staff; 

WCFSC Meeting: attended Dec. meeting and Four-County Collaborative Meeting on January 9 in Monticello ;

YF Budget Forecast: Drafted outlook for upcoming years;

Edina Realty: sponsored Toy Drive for Cardinal Buddies in December.  Toys were donated for Cardinal Buddies Holiday Party with Santa.  Approximately 78 toys were brought in.  Mary delivered photo collage thank you to Edina Realty;

Valentine Decorating: Sherry Foehrenbachers father and Ron Smith made wooden hearts for use in Valentine Door Decorating.  Mary and AMS Student Council will work with AMS students to make decorations;

All Night Grad Party: Helped find volunteers for positions not yet filled;

Mentoring

After the Bell/Teen Club: 31 students in grades 5/6,7/8 attend.  Gifts at the holiday party were given with donation by Edina Realty;

Cardinal Buddies: Seventh week.  There are 42 high school student volunteers, with 32 matches at this time.  Santa visited in December, with a trip to Toyland. Toys were donated by Edina Realty. Next week, portraits will be taken, free of charge, by Zahler photography.
