Mary and staff from AMS took 15 students to the nursing home on Feb.
5. Students made valentine
decorations with the residents, in the day room. They hung them on a valentine
tree. Everyone had cookies and milk.
Students decorated the doors with painted wooden hearts.
Hearts were cut out and donated by Lee Jenson, Ron Smith and Kenny
Rudolph. Zane donated wood.
Supplies and refreshments were provided through a YAR grant.
An article and photos were submitted to the Advocate (asset: community
values youth, activity during high-risk time); AMS Youth Night: Super Game Night was held Fri., Feb. 1 at The Free Church. 105 students and adults enjoyed games, movie, food and beverages. (asset: safe activity during high-risk time); AMS Youth Night: Planned for Friday, March 7.
After the Game: Was held by the Key Club on Friday, February 1, at the High School. Activities included Sumo wrestling, dodgeball, games, ping-pong and open gym. Free food was provided. Youth First and YAR worked with Key Club to help with a YAR grant for the night. Mary helped chaperone (asset: safe activity during high-risk time); AMS Exploratory Day: thirteen volunteers helped
on Jan. 15. Students had opportunity
to explore interests in various course offerings and field trips.
Solicited volunteers and scheduled them into classes. Sent reminder/thank
you letters to all volunteers. Sent thank you letters to all businesses that
participated. Made display of photos
donated by Zahler Photography (assets: caring school climate); Centennial Villa Bingo: AMS students join senior citizens for intergenerational activity (asset: youth given useful roles in community); On A Roll: Helped set up and greet people on Feb.5 and 6. Contacted Zane to be our guest speaker. His topic was respect. Working with Tim Prom and Zahler Photography to make respect posters for the Middle School (asset: caring school climate, other adult relationships); Student of the Month: (asset: caring school climate); A.M.S. Display Case: Update with student achievements and current events at AMS (asset: support, caring school climate); Boxtops for Education: Pizza party for class that collected the most Box tops and milk caps (asset: bonding to school); Community Connections Kiwanis Moonlight Bowling Fundraiser: for Youth First program, was held Sat., Feb. 23 at 5 PM at Heart of the Lakes Bowling. Mike Zieska, Jeff Lundquist and Mary B.B. organized, solicited silent auction items and found twelve teams to bowl. Mary sending out thank you letters to all donors; WCFSC Meeting: Mary attended Feb. 19 regarding future of the Collaborative; School and
Community-Wide Literacy Initiative: Working
with AMS volunteer front desk: proactive step to improve school security. We are giving valentine treats to front desk volunteers this week; Chamber of Commerce Social: Mary attended on January 31; Compile Youth First Coordinator Job Description: Mary wrote a list of job duties and the approximate time spent yearly on each duty; Youth First Brochure: Fundraising committee met Feb. 8 (Mark, Paul and Mary Zane was sick) to discuss changes to brochure. Nicole and Mary worked on updating brochure; Youth First Website: Mary will submit photos and changes to Jill Bishop, to include a donation section, similar to the brochure; Business Expo: Signed up for booth. Expo will be held on April 12 from 8AM 1PM. We are looking for board members to help at the booth; Volunteers this month: Adults: Exploratory Day 13 volunteers 56hours Expl. 514 hours Sent thank you notes to most volunteers; Mentoring Cardinal Buddies: Zahler Photography took professional portraits of each pair, at no charge. There are 42 high school volunteers and 32 matches at this time; After the Bell/Teen Club: After-school programs for identified AMS students. 36 students in grades 5-8 attend; Boys and Girls Clubs: Letters/permission slips sent home with 4th grade students that were in Cardinal Buddies. Also started recruiting Big Buddy helpers; Team Adventures: Spoke to new co-located social worker and her supervisor regarding social workers supervision of two summer programs that Youth First administers.
