Marvin A. Marohn, age 87, of Annandale, died Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at his home.

Funeral Services will be held 4:00 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church, Annandale with Rev. Thomas Queck officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, and one hour prior to the service on Monday, both at the church. A prayer service will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at the church.

Marvin Arthur Marohn was born February 16, 1931 in Annandale to Robert and Martha Marohn. He was baptized on March 22, 1931 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Middleville Township, and later confirmed in his faith on August 5, 1945 at Zion Lutheran Church in Annandale. During his high school years in Annandale, Marv excelled in sports, where his leadership qualities shown through and he was named captain for many of the sports teams. In 1949 Marv graduated from Annandale High School. He furthered his education at the University of Minnesota where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in business. While in college, Marv took military officer training courses and upon his college graduation, was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Marines Corps, where he honorably served his country. While stationed at Camp Pendleton, Marv studied at the Atomic, Biological and Chemical Warfare school as a part of the 9th motor transport unit. It was at Camp Pendleton that Marv met his future bride, Bernice Zurawski. On December 31, 1955, Marv and Bernice were united in marriage in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. The couple returned to Annandale where Marv took over his father’s business, Marohn’s Produce. After ten years of selling eggs and poultry, Marohn’s Produce closed. Marv entered the insurance business briefly selling for A.A.L. After about a year, he decided to get into the grocery business. Marv began looking for a store to buy when he and Bernice decided to build a new store, Marv’s Red Owl. Together, Marv and Bernice physically assisted in building of the store from the ground up and in 1967 the store officially opened. With his entrepreneurial spirit, Marv took his business ventures to the nearby communities of Buffalo and Cokato. As a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, Marv held various offices and positions within the church. In his spare time, Marv enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved watching Minnesota sports teams, with the Annandale Cardinals remaining amongst the top. Marv’s lifelong love of sports and his spirit of giving will be honored in the naming of the new ball field at the Annandale Recreation Park. He adored his grandchildren and was often found in the stands cheering them on in their various activities. Above all, Marv delighted in being in the presence of his family.

Marv is survived by his children and their spouses, Julie and Ronald Starke of Annandale, Robert and Valerie Marohn of Annandale, and Matthew and Vicki Marohn of Maple Lake; sister, Nora Bell of Wayzata; grandchildren and their spouses, Jill and Charles Gruys, Michael and Teresa Starke, Madilyn, Tanner, Holly, and Maxwell Marohn; great grandchildren, Kinsley and Beckham Starke, and Miles and McKenna Gruys; and nieces, nephews, other family members, friends, and numerous colleagues and employees. Marv was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister Viva Strohschein, and brothers-in-law, Marcus Strohschein and Duane Bell.

Michael Starke, Charles Gruys, George Potthoff, Jonathon Strohschein, David Strohschein, Marcus Strohschein, and Scott Douglas will serve as pallbearers with Jill Gruys, Madilyn, Tanner, Holly, and Maxwell Marohn serving as honorary pallbearers. Rev. Ken Tatkenhorst and Laura Thurk will provide music for the service.
