The
site of
this tiny park located on the NW corner of Oak (Main Street) and Cedar has
always been a central location in Annandale.
Until the 1970s a two story building sat on this corner. It housed Gloege Bakery
from 1932 until 1957 when the bakery moved to the southwest block on Main
Street. Then Clyde Peterson had a cabinetry business there into the 1960s. After
the building was demolished in 1970s, it was a vacant lot owned first by Ed Kaz,
then Lakedale Telephone Company. In 1984 Lakedale erected a tall wood clock
tower to hold a communication dish at the top. The dish brought long distance
calls into the telephone equipment building just north of the corner lot.
The tower’s construction brought some controversy when the company wanted to
erect a simple, functional metal tower, but townspeople didn't want such an
unsightly structure in the middle of town. Then Lakedale contracted a designer
to create the existing clock tower structure. The tower was surrounded by a
chain link fence until 2011 when the city contracted with then owner Windstream
Communication Company to build the park.
In 2011 the Annandale Community Team (ACT) took on the of turning the space into
a park. They sold personalized pavers on a pathway through the park, added
benches, picnic tables, and planters. The park was dedicated in 2012. In 2014 a
bronze statue of a little boy was added on the corner of the park, and it has
become an icon of the community.
